Péter Kántor, a Hungarian poet and literary translator who had been awarded the Hungarian Laurel Wreath Prize and the Attila József Prize, was born on November 5, 1949, and passed away in 2021 at the age of 71. The Péter Kántor Literary Foundation, which commissioned the memorial plaque, and his family wish to honor the artist on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of his birth.
The memorial plaque is located on the western facade of the building—which once housed the home of the artist, who described himself as a river poet—at the corner of Balassi Bálint Street and Stollár Béla Street, facing the Danube. The memorial, made of fine concrete, is 4 cm thick; its rounded form is set at a distance from the connecting facade, with text recessed into its surface commemorating the former poet. The text is complemented by a pebble—collected personally by the poet and embedded into the surface of the plaque—referencing the poet’s first work and the Danube, which played a defining role in his poetry.
